I was trying to download a youtube video from a box running 4.9
stable, but got the following error:

Unfortunately, I am not able to solve the issue since I am not a
programmer. I would appreciate any help regarding downloading and
playing video files on OpenBSD, something I haven't had to do until
recently, when it became a must.

It's simple. Use current/snapshots. All servers like Youtube and
similar changes their interface a lot so you must try to be close to
that as much as possible and it means actual versions of some apps as
much as possible.

On current you can watch HTML5 just fine with eg. xxxterm, Youtube
with Minitube or via youtube-dl, Youtube and a lot of other servers
with get_flash_videos

Changes made by Google broke yt, you'll need to use a newer
version of yt, ie

http://www.openbsd.org/cgi-bin/cvsweb/~checkout~/ports/net/yt/files/yt.lua?rev=HEAD;content-type=text%2Fplain

and then change the first line to
"#!/usr/local/bin/lua"

Also, if you add the URL with a leading space "yt" will spew errors.
(happens to me sometimes while pasting in URLs into a set of "" 's)
