tomcat 6.0.20 on 4.8

matteo filippetto
Hi,

I installed tomcat 6.0.20 on openbsd 4.8 release

No problem with installation and configuration but when I try to start tomcat
with sudo -u _tomcat /usr/local/tomcat/bin/startup.sh in
/etc/rc.local tomcat couldn't start.

Output from console

/usr/local/tomcat/bin/catalina.sh: /etc/tomcat/tomcat.rc[11]:
javaPathHelper: not found
Neither the JAVA_HOME nor the JRE_HOME environment variable is defined
At least one of these environment variable is needed to run this program
Edit `/etc/tomcat/tomcat.rc' to point to your $JAVA_HOME

Starting tomcat from rc.local without switch user (i.e. using root)
has no problem.

so the problem is that tomcat.rc can't find javaPathHelper when
starting from rc.local with sudo.

So I modified /etc/tomcat/tomcat.rc and atteched a diff.

Best regards

You should use "${LOCALBASE}" instead of /usr/local

I get the same issue under 4.8. We should build /etc/rc.d script for
4.9, -current. Is any working one version 7?

I mean: you cannot hard-code /usr/local path.

Instead, use:

JAVA_HOME=$(%%LOCAL_BASE%%/bin/javaPathHelper -h tomcat)

And then, in the port's Makefile, modify the do-install target
accordingly:

        @sed -e 's,%%PREFIX%%,${TRUEPREFIX},' \
                -e 's,%%CATALINA_BASE%%,${CATALINA_BASE},' \
                -e 's,%%LOCAL_BASE%%,${LOCALBASE},' \
                < ${FILESDIR}/tomcat.rc > ${SAMPLEDIR}/tomcat.rc

Cheers,
David

Hi David,

I had a few thoughts on your tomcat update:
- I think it might be time to retire v4 at this point.
- for v5, i did an update to 5.5.33
(http://dickman.org/openbsd/patches/www_tomcat_v5.diff)
- for v6, i also did an update to 6.0.32
(http://dickman.org/openbsd/patches/www_tomcat_v6.diff)
- i have not yet had a chance to update those updates yet though...

otherwise:
- it might be a good time to also remove kurt@ as he dropped
maintainership for tomcat.
- in tomcat.rc should ${LOCALBASE} be ${TRUEPREFIX}?

Thanks.

Agreed. It doesn't work at all with jdk-1.7.0.

I will have a look at these asap. Thank you.

Who wants to be the new one? I cannot.

No, because javaPathHelper is installed by another port.
