problems with X on AMD64

Hi,

I try since some weeks to get X running on my new machine.
The machine freezes immediatly after 'startx' or 'X -configure' -
nothing in logs.

If I set 'machdep.allowaperture=0', X starts with logging, but ends with
the expected error, setting machdep.allowaperture to 1 ends up in
freeze too, so I decided to leave it on 2 (as suggested in the FAQ).

I started with 4.0 stable, now I use 4.1 (as tagged some days ago) and
xenocara-HEAD. I have the same problem in all versions, 'startx' or
'X -configure' freezes the whole machine.
I tried only as root.

Today after the upgrade to xenocara-HEAD I tried 'startx' as user too
and I can not believe it starts successfully into windowmanager. I was
happy and thought all my problems are solved :)

But: _no_ I rebooted the machine tried it again as user and
it freeezed too, now I'm really desperated...

Maybe I have a hardware problem with the graphic card (passive cooler
is getting too hot on initialization?), but console is working fine...
maybe there is something wrong with my (not changed) default bios
options, I can configure a lot of things for the both PCI-Express slots
(for example: i can use both slots for graphic cards as 'one big single
slot' together...)?

I do not use GENERIC.MP since it was hanging on boot, but thats another
story and not so important for me for now.
I attached the dmesg and the log from the one and only successful
attempt from today, any hints are really really welcome.

What I not understand the xorg.log says: Build Date: 15 February 2007,
but i build it yesterday?

Re: problems with X on AMD64

I use a 7600 GS card with AMD 4200+ X2 processor I haven't have problems
with X other than card support solved by switching to xenocara, before I
could only use the vesa driver and couldn't use the correct display
resolution.

I might have a solution for the GENERIC.MP, only a guess as you don't
give details. I had a timeout during boot,

wd2(pciide2:0:0): timeout

        c_skip: 0

was the last thing on console and I had to reboot.

I use a similar motherboard using the nvidia nforce 5xx chipset, you
might be hitting the same issue. I found that if I disable the unused
SATA controllers in the BIOS the GENERIC.MP worked. In my case I have 4
SATA disks using two controllers but enabled all three controllers,
disabling the third unused controller the GENERIC.MP would boot, without
the SATA timout.
