Matt Jibson
Information for lilypond-2.8.3

Comment:
LilyPond - music notation for everyone

Description:
LilyPond is an "automated engraving system." It formats music
beautifully and automatically, and has a friendly syntax for its
input files. It is Free Software (open source).

Maintainer: Matt Jibson <[hidden email]>

WWW: http://lilypond.org/web/

--

Here are the port and dependencies for lilypond-2.8.3. Much of this
work was done by Matthias Killian. Included are:
print/ec-fonts-mftraced
print/fontforge
print/lilypond
print/mftrace
print/t1utils
textproc/texinfo

This was submitted some time ago, but was not able to be imported due
to lang/guile problems. guile has since been updated and that problem
is fixed. The texinfo port is a more recent version of the system's
version, but it is installed with a version suffix to differentiate it
from the system version.

For the commiters, it would be easiest to start looking at t1utils,
mftrace, and ec-fonts-mftraced. They are small and have few
dependencies. If they get imported, the others can be addressed.

i'll try to take care of these.

started looking at fontforge... you need USE_LIBTOOL, and better
dependency checking. for example, depending on whether tiff is installed,
the configure script comes up with something different. so if something
is needed, make sure it is installed, or if something is not needed but
picked up by default if installed, use some configure flag to disable it.

Just wait a day or two, I made some patches on my own local ports
of some of that stuff.

In addition to what Steven wrote:

1. Use MODULES=lang/python and (in CONFIGURE_ENV) PYTHON=${MODPY_BIN}.
I've done this for mftrace, but I'd prefer to get all this
building and running before sending diffs.

2. print/lilypond/pkg/PLIST goes nuts with fonts.cache-1 (look at
   pkg/PLIST).

3. --disable-documentation? Why? Back in Lilypond-2.4 aera it was the
documentation that triggered lots of bugs, especially in
   texinfo.

4. ec-fonts-mftraced: use binaries or build from (MetaFont) source?

I'll reserve the complete next weekend for this ports collection ;-)

I wanted to get the base program running, and building the docs was
screwing it up. Adding docs was a plan for later.

> 4. ec-fonts-mftraced: use binaries or build from (MetaFont) source?

Building from source takes a really long time, so why not use the
pre-packaged binaries that we would end up getting anyway? If the
result is the same, I see no reason to waste time, especially on
slower architectures, to build all the fonts.

Thanks for the comments thus far.

Well, it seems my own patches are mostly for (the old) ec-fonts-mftraced
and lilypond, so that doesn't help much.

Anyways, some flaws and comments:

- Installing the texinfo stuff with suffix 4.8 is fine, but
unfortunately some shell scripts included in texinfo don't account
for the --program-suffix and unconditionally invoke makeinfo,
  texi2dvi (i.e. without the 4.8 suffix).

Since Matt pointed out that building the documentation is planned
for the future, it would be a good idea to remove the dependency
of lilypond on texinfo for now (if possible). I'd prefer to discuss
the texinfo configure problems with Karl Berry (the author of
texinfo) before adding yet more patches.

- For the dependency problems in fontforge Steven mentioned: there's no
--without-tiff, --without-png, etc. Yuck! So all this *must* be added
  to LIB_DEPENDS.

- mftrace: two static libraries are missing in PLIST, and python should
be included using MODULES (diff below). If would also be great if
mftrace would call fontforge with crash recovery disabled, since
crash recovery tries to write to ~/.PfaEdit.

Then just lets drop the dependency to texinfo for now, o.k.?

Dunno. I just prefer to build them from MF sources for no good
reason -- but IIRC we did discuss this several months ago, so let's
forget about it ;-)

Anyways, below are some diffs to your ec-fonts-mftraced and lilypond
ports.

The former just makes the package architecture-independent and
clears a possibly set environment variable TEXMF on @exec and
@unexec.

The latter removes texinfo, fixes the fonts.cache-1 in every
directory, adds NO_REGRESS, moves python to MODULES, and fixes the
version check for fontforge (you get wrong results when comparing
number such as 20050624000000 and 20060413000000).
