>Description:
My motherboard and OpenBSD-3.8 seem to not like each other. Mainboard is
an older ASUS A7V600-X board [1].

Installing OpenBSD from cd works fine (had to disable ehci),
but after reboot into the new system, it hangs here:
pciide0 at pci0 dev 15 function 0 "VIA VT8237 SATA" rev 0x80: DMA

I don't use sata, only ide disks.

I have also tried a snapshot from yesterday and -current, but no luck.

Three dmesg's are included, one from the install cd, one via serial where it hangs
and one with pciide disabled.

If i can help with more infos, testing or ssh access, let me know.

Tobias

>How-To-Repeat:
Install from 3.8 CD and reboot.
>Fix:
Workaround: disable pciide. Disk activity does however make the system
very unresponsive and unuseable. Interrupts go over 30% when using dd (top).

I can confirm the same problem with my A7V600-EAY with OpenBSD 3.8.

For the record, it can be circumvented by disabling pcibios in UKC
as per instructions in the FAQ.

However, using SATA disks simultaenously with IDE disks seems to be
hopeless - the kernel will load, but then fail to locate the correct
 root partition.

I have actually given up on using the onboard SATA controller at all
and uses a cheap SiI3112 controller instead.

The VIA 8237 southbridge is notorious for disk problems. The southbridge is
not of good design nor fabrication. Tobias, you noted your motherboard is
rather old; your problems are most likely due to the inmature fabrication
process of the 8237 used early in its life.

It should be noted that the southbridge lacks asynchronous clocking--it runs
at a frequency porportional to the CPU's hypertransport bus.

Overclockers have observed extreme instability and failure of the SATA disk
controller, and later the IDE, with small increases in the CPU's bus speed
(as well as failure of the AGP/PCI controllers, since they get clocked too
high also.)

You could try underclocking the CPU bus to say "150" or lower in the hopes
you'll tame that nasty silicon. Or just plain disable the SATA in the BIOS.

VIA made a revision the the 8237 to address these problems--the VIA 8237R (how
original.)
