Support for AC 3165 chips was already present in 6.0.
Does the same problem happen in OpenBSD 6.0?

Given that video also has issues there may be an underlying problem that
prevents the iwm driver from working properly. As far as I know 3165 chips
are working in general. I do not have such a chip test with, though.

Re: iwm0 problems

George
No dmesg didnt have any messages on OpenBSD 6.0 back then. But wifi was
really slow and couldnt download with more than 500kbit/sec
Now with wifi i get 4.81Mbps download 0.58Mbps upload 240 ms ping
and with ethernet i get 10.79Mbps download 0.80Mpbs upload 115 ms ping

Re: iwm0 problems

George
I should add that video on 6.1 works fine when im connected to ethernet
So i guess the problem is with the iwm driver

It could be a driver bug but based on the information I have so far there
is nothing I can do but wait and see if somebody else reports the same
problem with an 3165 device. I have no such device to check myself.

Wifi is complicated. I am getting about 1 or 2 problem reports like yours
per week. Most of them turn out to not be driver bugs but general problems
with people's wifi setups.
The most recent one was that Lenovo had mistakenly wired up one of the WAN
antennas for 3g devices to the WLAN device in an x230 laptop they sold, and
that caused a bad signal and poor performance (I did not figure that out,
but gladly the person who reported the problem eventually found out).

Based on such experiences I have become careful about jumping to conclusions
about what must be a wifi driver bug. I certainly will not spend time
debugging a driver unless I get some very solid clues that point towards
a driver bug.

As far as I can tell from your report, your machine needs a BIOS update
or has broken ACPI or has some other hardware issue. Who knows.

Re: iwm0 problems

Steve Throckmorton
In reply to this post by George
I recently installed -current on a Dell laptop my mother decided she didn’t want.  I have the same problems with iwm0 on this machine (with its AC 3160 wireless device) as were reported for the 3165.

The dmesg I’m reproducing below includes this error msg at the end:

iwm0: hw rev 0x160, fw ver 16.242414.0, address 34:de:1a:24:9e:ec
iwm0: fatal firmware error
iwm0: device timeout
iwm0: device timeout
iwm0: device timeout

It’s only in the dmesg once, but when working at the console it frequently pops up in the middle of whatever I’m typing or reading.   When connecting via SSH, it results in frequent 5-second pauses.  File downloads are constantly interrupted (therefore very slow), implying that more work = more errors.  (Same for all of us, I guess.)

I’m afraid I can’t vouch for the machine’s BIOS.  Since Dell only provides updates in the form of a .exe file, I wish I had thought to update before I installed BSD.  I’ll try to find time to create the necessary DOS bootable and hope the thing doesn’t get bricked in the process, but in the meantime, I’m using it with a wired connection.

Hope this is useful.

I also have this issue with AC 3160. What i did as a workaround was to
switch iwm to 802.11g using

ifconfig iwm0 media autoselect mode 11g

So at least in my case i think that the problem lies within 11n and the
iwm0 driver. I didn't have this issue with 6.0 though.

Here is my dmesg:

Excellent!  That got my wireless interface working without error messages.  As far as I haven’t had a single firmware error in two hours.  I haven’t tested the download speed because I don’t have anything to compare it to, but it’s more than sufficient for my purposes.

Thank you.

Re: iwm0 problems

One question
Where did you put that command? I dont want anytime i connect to wifi to
open a terminal and execute that command.

I tried adding to /etc/hostname.iwm0
I put after up iwm0 media autoselect mode 11g

I tried adding it to /etc/hostname.trunk0 after dhcp
but it didnt work.

I also tried it to .xinitrc
doas ifconfig iwm0 media autoselect mode 11g
but it didnt work.

Re: iwm0 problems

George
Im not sure what you mean.
It says that anything not matching these packed formats are passed
directly to ifconfig.
My hostname.iwm0 was

nwid FSIE82
wpakey <password>
wpaakms psk
up
iwm0 media autoselect mode 11g

If i understand it it should execute

ifconfig nwid FSIE82
ifconfig wpakey <password>
ifconfig wpaakms psk
ifconfig up
ifconfig iwm0 media autoselect mode 11g

Once you notice that the first four commands here would never work as written, you may start to wonder if there isn’t a bit of magic in /etc/netstart that makes the last line problematic ;)

Put another way, you either need to include the interface name or you don’t—can’t have it both ways.

Thank you all for the additional reports! So there is indeed a regression
in 6.1 which is causing this problem.

I will try to find a 3165 device to play with.

Thanks to benno@ I got my hands on a machine with a 3165 device.

There is indeed a bug which I introduced while adding MIMO support.
This patch fixes the problem:
