iMac G3 panic

Ralf Saalmüller
Hello,

i'm pretty new to OpenBSD, only running debain or ubuntu on some iMacs
or PowerMacs. I like to give OpenBSD a try and got 3.9, burned it on CD
and tried to boot some hardware. I have an iMac G4/800 and an
iMac G3/500 where the CD boots up until I got ask to install, upgrade
or for a shell. Fine. Unfortunately those two iMacs don't have any spare
partition. But a third iMac G3/400 DV does.

When I try to boot up the iMac G3/400 DV the Mac will panic right after
probing the GEM ethernet adapter. It get into the debugger but keyboard
is dead. The iMac got the same firmware as the iMac G3/500, both have
at least 512MB RAM, ethernet is connected. Both run MacOS X and
Ubuntu 6.06 without any problem. And NVRAM / P-RAM is more often
reset on the iMac G3/400 DV than on every other Mac in my house.

Any idea or holy pee how to get it up running?

Short:
iMac G4/800 booting up until Install Upgrade Shell prompt
iMac G3/500 booting up until Install Upgrade Shell prompt
iMac G3/400 DV panic after probing ethernet

As I said, keyboard is dead, I can't typ in 'trace', 'ps' or anything

the cd39.iso. As I said, this cd, the very same cd, does boot on a iMac
G4 and an iMac G3/500 Dalamtina CD-RW without kernel panic. Both iMac
G3 have the same firmware and are connected to the same network.

The iMac with that booting problem runs Ubuntu-Linux. If you like to
have the dmesg log, please just tell me. I don't no if this would be
helpful.

Hope this helps a little more,
Ralf

Hi,

i had the same problem on my powermac G4/400 with open 3.8 and 3.9 !
I disabled gem in UKC> , then booting was ok, and now the ethernet
adapter is detected as a DEC one and it's working correctly ...

Re: iMac G3 panic - in depth

David Gwynne
Hey Bastien,

can you post a dmesg of your system in its working state?

im a bit confused by your statement regarding the DEC nic. do you
have to disable gem to get the dc to attach, or does dc attach
without a config change in -current?

thanks,
dlg

Re: iMac G3 panic - in depth

Bastien Mourlon
Hi,

Yeah i had to disable gem to boot, don't know if dc attach with
gem enabled, because i couldn't boot without it disabled with
stable or with -current ( i'm running -current now for other reasons
... trying to get my wireless atheros based card working ).

Maybe trying to get info from openfirmware about the integrated nic is a
good idea... On my machine it seems that openfirmware informations about
the nic are wrong or even empty...  I will try to reboot later and get
these informations ...

Thanks a lot for your help,

I managed to boot from of prompt into UKC and disabled the gem
ethernet. Now I need to config / build a new kernel without gem.

I had some trouble with p/fdisk and disklabel. If you would print in
the INTALL.macppc that you need to write down the base address of the
p/fdisk OpenBSD partition for use in the disklabel setup, things would
be more easy. That's what I done and it works. But I really don't know
if I done right.

As I said, I have a triple boot system with MacOS X, Ubuntu and now
OpenBSD. After installation I tried to set up yaboot but failed. I
tried to boot from OpenFirmware and failed too. I booted the CD and I
could mount /dev/wd0a. I print out section 5.8 of the german manual
about configuration at boot time. There is said that you can boot OF
with "boot hd0a:/bsd" That doesn't work.

In the englich INSTALL.macppc I found that I could boot from
OpenFirmware after copying ofwboot and bsd.rd on the first hfs
partition. I copied ofwboot and started at the OpenFirmware prompt with
my guess "boot hd:,ofwboot". That was a success. I still can't find a
description on how to restart the Mac for the first time. Am I too dumb
to find it?

A lot work to do ...

Re: iMac G3 panic and boot

Hi Ralph

No need to rebuild a kernel, once you have booted just do :

        # config -e -u -o /bsd.new /bsd
        ukc> disable gem
        ukc> quit
        # mv /bsd /bsd.old
        # mv /bsd.new /bsd

As explained there http://www.openbsd.org/faq/faq5.html#config

Could you tell us if your integrated nic is also recognized as DEC one
like on my G4, or just send your dmesg.

I'm sorry, but i don't understand your last question "how to restart the
Mac for the first time" ...

You do not need to rebuild your kernel from source if you can boot
OpenBSD. See config(8)
