ftpd(8) bin folder

Fritjof Bornebusch
I tried to find out how the ~/ftp/bin folder is used?
But after implementing ls(1) by Art internally:

it looks like the bin folder becomes some kind of obsolete:
- the function that executes a certain program is: ftpd_popen
- but this function is either called with "/bin/ls" or "NULL"

Is there an ftp called I overlooked or is the ~/ftp/bin folder
a remains from pre-ls-internal times.

The manpage says:
~ftp/bin  Make this directory owned by “root” and unwritable by
anyone (mode 511).  This directory is optional unless you
have commands you wish the anonymous FTP user to be able
to run (the ls(1) command exists as a built-in).  Any
programs in this directory should be mode 111 (executable

So it looks like there is a way to call certain commands stored under: ~ftp/bin
