Further testing has revealed that while aucat doesn't work, writing to
/dev/audio0 works fine and respects the mixer settings.

Hi,

Thanks for the report.

Could you check that recording (or "microphone" or whatever it is
called) is enabled in the BIOS settings?

There's a known problem with many devices: when recording is disabled
in the BIOS the device keeps claiming recording capability, which
confuses the azalia driver and breaks audio.

Note that, if this is not a multi-boot system, recording still can be
disabled globally, by the kern.audio.record sysctl.

I've previously encounted the issue you're referring to and yes, the
microphone is enabled in the BIOS.

Audio was working fine until I updated to the 2019-09-06 snapshot. I'm
unsure as to which snapshot I had been running before that, but it
was at most a week and a half old.

fwiw my X1 gen2 works fine with that snap.

The hardware is quite different though and I'm on a considerably older
bios...

Well, this is embarassing. I discovered that I had a quite large buffer
size:

    sndiod_flags=-b 24000

in /etc/rc.conf.local. I don't recall why exactly or when I added it, I
believe it was issues with mpd and an online radio station.

Some playing around has revealed that setting a buffer size smaller than
16386 results in working audio, while greater than that doesn't.
