        Currently running an Atheros AR9280 (which curiously pcidump seems to identify as
        a AR9281, unknown if related) hostap 802.11n hostap setup, can seem to reliably cause
        a panic if I associated/re-associate with my laptop repeatedly. Sometimes it happens
        immediately, sometimes after a bit of traffic and a re-association, sometimes after
        several cycles of up/downing the athn interface on openbsd, but always reliably.
        DDB traces follow below.

        Re-associate repeatedly with a client when using an Atheros AR9280 card, triggers
        very reliably.

Are you implying that these panics do not occur if your athn(4) hostap
is in 11a/g mode instead of 11n? That would be useful to know.

Sorry I was not more explicit with my testing, running an ifconfig
random up/down loop + a random re-association loop on the client, when
placed into g mode there does not appear to be an issue after about half
an hour (This card does not support 802.11a). It does indeed appear to
be restricted to 802.11n.

When i apply this diff to -current, i can successfully run an associate
+ tcpbench 30 second speed test loop for around 30 minutes and the
machine no longer panics, previously it would trigger almost
immediately.

However, with this diff applied (did not test vanilla -current)
associations often time out for the client, and when it does
successfully associate (about 50% of the time) pings are above 400ms
and speeds jump between 0 and 2mbit very erratically (this also occurs
in 802.11g ap mode)

This did not occur in 6.4-stable without your patch applied, I can test
-current without your patch too, if you are interested in the results.

I have now tried -current without your diff and I can confirm that it
*does not in fact trigger*. All commentary from here on will be in
relation to unpatched -current

The speed does not settle, it remains erratic even with quite lengthy
tcpbench testing. I run this exact same hardware as an AP under linux
and have no issues, and I can confirm there is no rouge interference
either from other APs, or anything else around me with almost total
certainty.

and athn_g.pcap.gz. Both experience ping and speed issues, but only
802.11n mode seems to have random problems with auth.

Ditto with iwn_g.gz and iwn_n.gz from a third, unassociated system in
monitor mode.

Sorry for the large file sizes, I wanted to capture a decent chunk of the
behavior, especially the failures to associate. (the athn captures suffered
some dropped packets due to not being able to write fast enough due to a shitty
usb device, can redo tests with an alternate setup if necessary stuff wasn't
captured)

Thanks again for the effort, I know hardware problems are involve a lot of
hair pulling.

Should also note that without your patch perhaps the speed was slightly
more stable, its difficult to be certain, but it was definitely still
hitting 0 a lot, with randomly high pings.

Should also note again that this behavior definitely was not present in
6.4-stable, N mode wasn't really any faster than G mode, but both were
close to 54mbps (at least until the panic struck for N mode).

Your AP is sending a lot of retries which is why speed is so low.
The assoc problems you are seeing are likely also due to this because
there are many of reties when the AP sends assoc responses.
I can't explain why this is happening but it looks like a driver bug.
I don't see this issue on my APs and I am not aware of anyone else seeing
this issue.

We need to figure out which change introduced excessive retries for you.

Can you figure out which post-6.4 kernel image which first shows the issue?
The first commit happened on Jan 31 2018, so please try to confirm that
kernels before this date were OK and then move forward from there.

While looking at your pcap files, I realized my previous patch had a bug
with QoS frames using 'normal ACK' policy, which are sent by your client
device. Perhaps this version works a bit better in 11n mode, but it won't
fix your 'retry' problem.
