WLAN disconnects after a while

Roderick

I still have this problem:

https://marc.info/?t=151489467400003&r=1&w=2

Now tested with other AP (FritzBox).

I am the only one?

As stsp@ said, its hard to debug like this.

Today a fix was okayed for a problem that sounds like it might be yours:

        https://marc.info/?l=openbsd-tech&m=156925557704956&w=2

If you run current, you could try that diff and see if it fixes your problem.
Or wait until it is commited and then update to a snapshot after that.

You could also send the output of

        ifconfig <if> scan

when your internet is working, and again when it stops working.

Possibly that shows if you encounter the same problem as the one addressed
by that diff.

The AP I am using does not change channel, hence that is not the problem.

I would like to buy another USB UMTS stick and try with it. Is there
a recommendation of a good working one, that is also sensible and
powerfull enough to send and receive through some walls?

What I have is recognized as run (RT3001), urtw (RTL8187), athn (AR9271).
With the last two I have a lot of packet los, 25% or more.

The nettop has one recognized as ath (AR5424), but when doing
dhclient I get the message:

ar5k_ar512_nic_wakeup: invalid radio frequeny mode
ath0: unable to resethardware; hal status 0

Thanks
Rodrigo.

Lapsus. I mean WLAN stick. Any recommendation?

Another WLAN Stick I have is rsu, recognized as RTL8188S, but
with it I do not even get the link.

Below an up to date dmesg.

Soo I will perhaps buy an urtwn for my collection of USB sticks.

A small discovery: it is a little diferent from other sticks.

It requires "ifconfig rsu0 up" before "dhclient rsu0".

It seems to work very good: no packet loss. Now I am waiting
to see if the link gets lost.

Re: WLAN disconnects after a while

Report on new experience. :)

I bought a used no name, Model WS-WN689HN2, distributed in germany
by conrad electronics. The good news: till now it does not disconnect.

It is a coarseness with two big antenae, I read "wireless N high
power". But that is all: no where it is written how many watts
it sends.

What is the chipset? It is recognized as RT3071, RF RT3022. And I
did test two normal USB wlan sticks (with no external antenae)
with the same chipset recognized, and the link in both is interrupted
after a short period of time. They recognized the same APs, and
the one with two antenae not necessarily with more dBm.

Also interesting is that the same devices regognizes more APs
in OpenBSD than in FreeBSD, and that in OpenBSD ping takes longer
(perhaps depends on the slower CPU).

Well, soon I will buy and test a urtwn. :)

Re: WLAN disconnects after a while

Just tried EDIMAX EW7811Un with RTL 8188CUS chipset (urtwn driver).

It is recommended for OpenBSD in many places, for example here:

https://flak.tedunangst.com/post/some-mini-usb-wifi-adapters

It works perfectly. It does not disconnect.

I think this is the choice if the internal WLAN Device of a
mobile computer does not work and one does not want to test
changing the internal device. Reason: its size.
