Using OpenBSD songs as sound reel for commercials

Olivier Lemaire
Greetings,

I did not find the information in the OpenBSD homepage nor in the cvs/songs directories so I feel sorry to bother you with this probably unusual question but… Is that possible to use some OpenBSD songs as sound reel for commercials?

The company I'm currently working for is preparing a show and did some video about some company products - but still no sound/music in background.

As the time dimension of Marketing boys seems to greatly differs from the real world one, they are in a hurry of course to find something decent as the sound reel…

So I did made a mockup using some OpenBSD song and … they just find it somewhat cool (exact reactions varies from WTF to Great, which indicate me that even if Marketing, they are still human of the Real World when ending to a so important thing like Music).

So my question: can we "freely" use some of the songs as music band for the company commercial with your prior agreement?
-> If so, what do we need to place as credits?
( If not, no matter: at least some of the marketing guys did discover some other good/great music out there ;)

Tia for any answer.

Cordialement / Best Regards / Saludos

My feeling is that using our songs for such commercial/marketing
purposes is not very nice.  Clearly even if you put it into the
credits, the people it reaches won't know what they are because you
are effectively saying it is your own.  Or that you bought it.  That's
what other companies normally do after all, buy pablum to use as
pablum.

I know you are asking for what you should do for credits if you do so,
but the implication is that the songs will be used as 'stock music'.

Stock music is not what the volunteer or paid musicians were creating.
I think the use you suggest violates the spirit of the music, deeply.

I agree on the main lines.

I was anyway thinking that:
* tech folks will surely recognise some songs (Lyrics are after all explicits..) => let's have fun between us
(the commercials are for technical products linked to the digital cinema business - there's some techs there too)
* that music is good music anyway, so let it have a chance to compete with general stuff (where there is some nicety too of course)

But I'll end up (of course) with the OpenBSD decision: so. let me "know the final answer" :)

Cheers,
