Thinkpad X1 Carbon 5th Gen: Flaky Suspend

Edd Barrett-3
Hi everyone,

I've recently upgraded from a Thinkpad x230t to a 5th generation X1
Carbon.

For the month or so I've had it (usually updating my snapshot every week
or so) suspend has been a bit flaky. Often it does zzz and wake fine,
but occasionally (say 1 time out of 5), something goes wrong. Either:

 * It doesn't make it to sleep state (the power light remains flashing,
instead of "pulsing/fading" which would indicate a proper suspend),

 * Or, it makes it to suspend but fails to wake.

The latter is the most common scenario. Let's focus on this.

Often when the machine fails to wake, the screen corrupted as the system
went down for suspend. There is a vertical green bar pattern on screen
for about 3 seconds before the screen goes blank and the system
suspends. I'm about 90% certain that when the screen corrupts, the
system doesn't wake properly.

Further, when the system fails to wake, the CPU fan goes crazy
(perhaps suggesting the CPU is spinning waiting for something to happen?
A spin lock?). During this time the power light is flashing and the
screen is blank.

Here is a video of this behaviour:
https://www.flickr.com/video_download.gne?id=24778120777

(You can use mplayer on the URL directly)

I spoke to jcs on icb, since I knew that he has one of these systems. He
suggested I try disabling rtsx(4). This is not the issue. The above
video was captured with rtsx(4) disabled via config(8).

At the time of the video, I had a USB wireless mouse receiver and a
yubikey 4 plugged in to the USB ports. I used these devices on my x230t
for many years without suspend issues.

I don't know when the issue started for these machines. It's always been
this way since I owned mine. I can tell you that the issue is present
both before and after the intel-firmware-20180108 update.

I am not using softdep.

Secure boot is disabled in the BIOS. So is the trusted platform module.

Could it be an inteldrm issue? I notice the following line in dmesg:
error: [drm:pid0:i915_firmware_load_error_print] *ERROR* failed to load firmware i915/kbl_dmc_ver1.bin (-22)

Dmesg follows. Thanks.

I've actually been avoiding using `zzz`. I'll start using it again and
report back.
