Sudden reboot after resuming from hibernation

Alessandro Grassi
>Synopsis: Sudden reboot after resuming from hibernation
>Category: system
>Environment:
        System      : OpenBSD 6.2
        Details     : OpenBSD 6.2 (GENERIC.MP) #0: Thu Oct 12 19:53:18 CEST 2017
                         [hidden email]:/usr/src/sys/arch/amd64/compile/GENERIC.MP

        Architecture: OpenBSD.amd64
        Machine     : amd64
>Description:
After hibernating (ZZZ), the bootloader correctly recognises the hibernation and resumes for it.
However most of the times a few seconds after it's done resuming and X pops back, the computer is rebooted/reset.

        Not sure how relevant, but:
          - I run a Thinkpad X200 with libreboot
          - I'm using FDE (swap is on the same physicla disk as root, standard installation)
          - I dual boot with Linux
          - The bootloader is started by chainloading seabios from libreboot, which then chainloads MBR
          - The system is otherwise functional, except for X hanging sometimes when using compton
          - No dumps found in /var/crash

>How-To-Repeat:
        - Hibernate ($ ZZZ)
        - Resume

I tried a bunch of times since installation, I have a vague memory of
it working once or twice.

Definitely not recently though.

Sure thing. Normal boot or dehibernation?

Those regions look ok.

Can you try a small test:

1. on next boot> , type:
  mach mem =256M

2. then 'boot'

3. ZZZ

4. power up the machine again and do step 1 again that time

See if that makes any difference. It's telling the kernel to only
use 256MB RAM. You need to do the same thing in step 4 after restarting
or it will think the memory size changed and skip un-hibernate.

If that doesn't work, I'd start to think it's some sort of coreboot/libreboot
thing as hibernate has been pretty stable for most machines for quite some time.
We did make a change at the recent hackathon to make things faster, but I don't
see how that would be causing this.

Also, when you unhibernate your 4GB machine as above, does it sit for some
time with a black screen after loading the hibernated image or does it instantly
restart after reading it?

Hi Mike,

Sorry for the delay, I couldn't find enough contiguous spare time to
run the tests in the last few days.

This would give me an out of memory error on dmesg, probably because
my X11 setup takes more than 256MB of ram: the system was swapping
when I typed ZZZ.
I tried with 512.

Well it resumed (with 512), I tried a few times to hibernate right
after a clean boot and it worked.

During all the tests I made, it would always resume after the first
hibernation following a complete reboot, but never after the second
one.

On most of the successful resumes I see "pipe state doesn't match" on
the console, though I don't remember ever seeing it when it resets.

This last time it didn't reset, but just resumed booting normally
after throwing a few errors about the gpu.

I could take a photo of the console, that I'm attaching here.

The only crashes / instabilities I'm experiencing with OpenBSD on this
laptop (e.g. a few times the system froze completely, couldn't even
switch to tty, had to hard reset, no crash dump) feel like they're
related to either a memory fault or a problem in the gpu drivers.

Sits for a few seconds in the black before I see X again, like 2 or 3.

Thank you

There seems to be a lot of unrelated information here.

Can you summarize please:

* when does it work
* when does it not work

leave out anything about freezes or gpus or unrelated stuff.

Alright. I've tried some more times, and I can say that it regularly:

* Resumes correctly from the first hibernation after a clean boot
* Fails to resume from any second hibernation

This happens with or without the memory limitation on the bootloader.

On all my recent tests it didn't reset, but just printed the
information I attached in the other mail and dropped a tty login when
I pressed enter.

Alessandro

Thanks for settling that. Just for another data point, are you using SR
crypto, and could you please send your dmesg again? (I tossed the original
email).

I can't see why this would fail. I just unhibernated a bunch of times in a row
with a ton of memory in use, and I didn't see any errors. Nor have I heard of
anyone else having problems on the second unhibernate.

I'm guessing this has something to do with coreboot, since that seems to be
the only large difference in play here. If you can find another machine that's
the same model as yours w/o coreboot, and it still fails, let me know and I'll
dig further. But I tossed out all my hardware from this era a while ago.

I am sure coreboot is the problem.  I suspect it skips some steps
which a BIOS must do, or has some non-determinism on different
powerups, or feeds our kernel AML + accessed data which results in
different configuration being created by the bsd.booted kernel before
hibernate-resume.  Then when the original kernel starts running again,
it hits something unexpected and explodes.  We cannot tell what that
is.

The situation is that unhibernate is very reliable based upon an assumption
that the underlaying hardware behaves the same on two seperate powerups.

The only reports of failure I see are from those electing to run
coreboot, so the people responsible for tracking this down are those
people running coreboot.
