I booted the latest snapshot, and got to the INSTALL prompt.  unfortunately,
the install program could not find the scsi drives on the K200 ... but this
is definitely an improvement!!  Thanks!!!  Below is the session log with
a dmesg after the install failed ....

Welcome to the OpenBSD/hppa 4.2 install program.

This program will help you install OpenBSD. At any prompt except password
prompts you can escape to a shell by typing '!'. Default answers are shown
in []'s and are selected by pressing RETURN.  At any time you can exit this
program by pressing Control-C, but exiting during an install can leave your
system in an inconsistent state.

Terminal type? [vt100]

IS YOUR DATA BACKED UP? As with anything that modifies disk contents, this
program can cause SIGNIFICANT data loss.

It is often helpful to have the installation notes handy. For complex disk
configurations, relevant disk hardware manuals and a calculator are useful.

Proceed with install? [no] yes
Cool! Let's get to it.

You will now initialize the disk(s) that OpenBSD will use. To enable all
available security features you should configure the disk(s) to allow the
creation of separate filesystems for /, /tmp, /var, /usr, and /home.

No disks found.

Cool!  But it doesn't find all devices yet.  Could you try a verbose
boot with this kernel?

Thanks.  I've spotted a possible problem.  Can you try:

  http://www.xs4all.nl/~sibelius/openbsd/bsd.lif

This is a LIF image, so you should be able to netboot it.

Of COURSE!  Oh, and here is the verbose dmesg, looks like a vnode issue,
as HPUX is on the drives now (actually with an LVM setup).  As we've made
this much headway, and looking like ultimately success is looming, I'll go
ahead and nuke the disks when I can get to the point where an OpenBSD
install is possible!!

Thanks so much for your assistance.

Pleasant dreams.
Rob.

Oh, well, no, the problem is that this is a normal kernel, and since
you netbooted, it expects to be able to mount the root filesystem over
nfs.  That fails (probably because you didn't set it up), and the
kernel gets a bit annoyed by that ;).

Anyway, you can find a new kernel at

  http://www.jive.nl/~kettenis/bsd.lif

Hopefully this one will make it see your disks.

Ok, I've put up another kernel, that should print some debug info.

Can you give that one a go?

Mark,

Should I be setting up an NFS partition for booting?  The initial boot
allowed me to perform an install, but could not find the hard drives.
I just figured that once we have a kernel which sees my drives, and boots
properly, I'll simply await the next snapshot, and install that using an
FTP install from the bootp machine ... Anyways, here's the verbose output
from the last kernel ...

Any chance you can get it booted into HP-UX, and run ioscan(1m)?

``ioscan -f'' would provide useful information about the disks
that are attached.

From the looks of things, OpenBSD is finding the devices
attached to the single ended, narrow controller, but not the
devices attached to the other (probably a wide, high voltage
differential controller.)

I'd *guess* that the HVD controller is attached to the uturn1,
which doesn't seem to be probing well. (if I'm remembering the
dmesg's correctly.)

I hope this helps,

I will do.  The HPUX boot currently takes about 30-50 min owing to
a misconfigured network ... so it'll be about an hour to get you the
ioscan -f  stand by.

Yes, that might help to see what hardware I'm still missing and where
I should be looking for it.

Looking at the above, and comparing to the dmesg output, only
10/12 is getting successfully scanned.

10/ (which is where the "interesting" scsi host adapter is)
isn't being reviewed at all. (yes, there is a SCSI host adapter
directly on the GSC bus.)

10/4 doesn't appear to be scanned either, but that may be as
much because none of the devices on it (the 3 RS-232 MUXes, and
the Token Ring LAN card) are supported.

(I'd bet 10/4 is an EISA adapter, similar to what is used in
the 735 and 755.)

Oh, and those drives on the 10/0 are all HVD fast/wide SCSI
drives. (if I'm remembering Seagate's nominclature correctly,
and having operated enough of those drives, I should be... :D )

My biggest question: does the GSC bus enumerator look for
anything besides the bus_adapter at 10/12?

[and now, I'll return to the peanut gallery..]

So the stuff is really there, and the interesting bits are behind the
same uturn(4) as all the other stuff.

I just noticed another bit of bus scanning code in Linux.  There's a
new bsd.lif for you to try ;).

Mark,

It seems that we've (you've 8-) found the hard drives on the SCSI bus, and
the boot failed at the NFS init spot ... Should I be setting up NFS drives
for this puppy?  Nice work!

Rob.

That's excellent news.  I've committed a little hack to do this
additional probing on (some) K-class servers, so there should be
snapshots in a few days, and you could just wait for that.

Setting the machine up to boot diskless over nfs is another option;
see diskless(4) for details.  Not sure if that's a fun thing to do
over ie(4) though.

Looks like two of your drives are giving you some problems, but HP-UX
was complaining about those too, so I'm not going to worry about that.
Perhaps you should just remove them.

Seems there are still some devices missing, probably behind those
unconfigured bus converters.  I'll see if I can figure out something
about those.

Thanks,

Mark

Rob (and other K-class owners),

New snapshots have been built.  They haven't hit ftp (or its mirrors)
yet, so I've put a LIF image and a kernel up at:

   http://www.jive.nl/~kettenis/hppa/lif42.fs
   http://www.jive.nl/~kettenis/hppa/bsd

For everything else, using a recent snapshot should be fine.

I expect that ftp.openbsd.org catches up tomorrow or so.  Stuff dated
Dec 22 or later should already have the necessary changes.

Hopefully this'll let you install OpenBSD on the machine.  Let me know
if this works, and I'll send you a few more diffs to try.

Cheers,

Mark
