Questions about 3.8 on amd64

excalibur-3
Hi,

As I sit here thinking about it, I have only one question.  I have an
nvidia video adapter in my box and want to know if the nvidia drivers on
their web site work for FreeBSD work for OpenBSD.  Has anybody had any
luck getting them to work ok?  Oh, this is for the amd64 kernel, not
just i386.

Please note that I'm not subscribed to the mail list because my ISP
restricts the size of my mail box to 5 mb.  I don't have enough time to
read e-mail through the week (once if I'm lucky) to keep my box from
over flowing, so please include my e-mail address in the reply when
replying to the mail list.

Thanks,
Andy

I asked the dealer for the "cheapest video card you got", was given:
 vga1 at pci1 dev 0 function 0 "Nvidia GeForce4 MX 4000" rev 0xc1
All things considered, I probably should have said, "Cheapest non-Nvidia
card you got", but I didn't have too much trouble getting it running
1280x1024x24bpp.  Original plan was just to do text on this machine, but
once I got X working on it, it has proven handy.  I didn't, and won't,
add any third party drivers to this machine for its application, this
thing does what I wanted.  Of course, all I wanted was lots of dots on
the screen, but I'm pretty happy with these results.  Full dmesg follows.

I wouldn't bother trying to get third party binary drivers working.
They make upgrades unpleasant (and thus, you will be reluctant to do
them!), and someday, you may upgrade and find they no longer work.

Nick.
