Issues with PowerMac g5 970MP

Rino Rondan
Hi!!
I decide to test openbsd in my macppc

restaurador# sysctl hw
hw.machine=macppc
hw.model=970MP (Revision 0x101)
hw.ncpu=2
hw.byteorder=4321
hw.pagesize=4096

hw.diskcount=2
hw.sensors.lmtemp0.temp0=28.50 degC
hw.sensors.maxds0.temp0=29.69 degC (Internal)
hw.sensors.maxtmp0.temp0=38.12 degC (Internal)
hw.sensors.maxtmp0.temp1=51.00 degC (External)
hw.sensors.maxtmp1.temp0=36.00 degC (Internal)
hw.sensors.maxtmp1.temp1=34.50 degC (External)
hw.cpuspeed=2000
hw.vendor=Apple Computer, Inc.
hw.product=PowerMac11,2
hw.physmem=2684354560
hw.usermem=2684342272
hw.ncpufound=2
hw.allowpowerdown=1
It was my first time using openfirmware, I do not have any problem with installation and boot process but I had issues with sata disk and video driver.

An output of a dimes after machine crash (12 hours running without any error, only two tty with top and other with irrsi  in text mode)

restaurador# dmesg

I have random problem with disk, several time appear messages like :
wd0a : device timeout writing fsbn ......number..... of .....number......
Never come back after that and sometime the cooler run more faster and server hang.
I think I need to test boot or install with external disk to check if the problem is with my sata cable , maybe sata driver. Normally if do several I/O task the server crash in one hour but I uses normal without less I/O will work fine but sometime crash.

And other issue is VIDEO, I want to use xorg with standard values,
I read /usr/X11R6/README, wsbf works for me.
vgafb0 at pci0 dev 0 function 0 "NVIDIA GeForce 6600" rev 0xa2, mmio

I test my own xorg.conf and wsbf works but start in Depth 1 in monochrome status.

Any suggestions to configure my box ¿?

Regards

Re: Issues with PowerMac g5 970MP

Matthias Freitag
Hi Rondan,
i have the same machine and also the same problems with wd0 timeouts. Pops
up randomly, somethimes under heavy load, sometimes while doing basically
nothing (like in your case).
Haven't gotten any further on this, as i can't find any deeds about it. I
also can't use more than 1,6G of RAM, although there's more in the machine.
I have the same machine running with FreeBSD with no hardware problems
whatsoever, but OpenBSD doesn't want to for some reason :/
Can't say anything about video though as i don't intend to run X on it.

Cheers, schojo

Re: Issues with PowerMac g5 970MP

Christoph R. Murauer
Hello !

> I also can't use more than 1,6G of RAM, although there's more in the
machine.

That is normal (I have here 2 DP G5s) because OpenBSD runs only in 32
bit mode (even the G5 is a 64 bit CPU). See
https://www.openbsd.org/macppc.html section History. The max RAM in
the G4 (G3 less) was 2 GB see
https://everymac.com/systems/apple/powermac_g4/specs/powermac_g4_450.html
as example.

Yeah i know about it running in 32bit-mode, but even then it should be able
to use more than 1,6G right?
I have an iBook G4 that has a max RAM of 1,5G on hardware-basis which makes
sense and all, but on a G5?!

Also, did you see his dmesg? :)

Re: Issues with PowerMac g5 970MP

Rino Rondan
Hi!!

I tested also with ubuntu ppc64 and works very fine, also Freebsd 11.1 (currently testing now )

With ubuntu 16 I have problem with Nvidia driver I can not start correctly, only frame buffer but with Ubuntu and Freebsd I did not have any error with Disk and memory is ok. I will test Fedora later ..

Do you know if openbsd works fine in powerbook g4 1.67ghz and Mac mini 1.2ghz models also Apple Airport Extreme A1408 5th /6th Gen , I do not know if it a good choice use those kind of router I do not know about those old model.

That is why I use OpenBSD. I have built packages on my PPC machines with Gentoo Linux and can confirm you may need a few cups :-)

Re: Issues with PowerMac g5 970MP

Jordan Geoghegan
OpenBSD has hands down the best PowerPC support out there. I still use a
G4 as an ssh/serial terminal / network scanning machine and another dual
cpu G4 as a small webserver.  They just wont quit and have found no
reason to migrate to something else. It even handles my secondary
softraid crypto drive like a boss as well. 10/10 support for packages
too. Anything I need within reason is just a quick pkg_add away. No
compiling, no screwing around. Oh thank heaven for OpenBSD. It Just Works

I have not seen any RAM / Disk errors using OpenBSD on a dual G5. But
what I know is, not all HDs / SSDs work.

For the MacMini and, the PB (15" and 17") yes, see
https://www.openbsd.org/macppc.html

To be clear, I can use a (US) AirPort WiFi card in my second G5 with
OpenBSD.

The Airport Extreme (which you asked for - the external box and not
the Airport Card for some Mac models) is not related to OpenBSD.
Router is here not the right word, as you need another device like a
cable modem at the WAN port. I run here a 5th generation AirPort
Extreme and a Express to extend the WiFi. The Extreme runs in Bridge
mode and is connected to a TP-Link LTE box. Keep in mind, for a
Express / Extreme you need the Airport Utility on Mac OS X (the iOS
version provided not all setting options as I tried it the last time)
to configure / manage it. See
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AirPort_Extreme

Regards,

Christoph

I have the same issue and searching for solution since some time.
On OpenBSD the machine works OK on SP kernel. However having dual processors I decide to switch to FreeBSD to check and the hardware works fine.
I tried a few different hardisks but none was working correctly. I will try with reduced RAM.
