Cannot change brightness on Packard Bell EasyNote TS13HR laptop using xbacklight nor hotkeys.

        My laptop (Packard Bell EasyNote TS13HR) has two brightness
        hotkeys (F11/F12). I cannot change the brightness using these.
        I also cannot change the brightness using xbacklight.

        This problem occurred in OpenBSD 5.5, and occurs in -current.

        xbacklight has no effect.
        $ xbacklight
        70.000000 # this is the default value on my system?
        $ xbacklight -set 10%
        $ xbacklight -get    
        10.000000
       
        ... yet it looks exactly the same, no change.
        When I used Linux, I had to set acpi_backlight=vendor in my
        Grub config, (as per
        http://askubuntu.com/questions/128463/how-to-control-brightness).
        Failure to do this would result in the same behaviour being
        observed now.

        I am happy to attach any useful information or respond with the
        output of any applicable commands that would be of help to the
        reader.

Looks like the answer is intel_backlight (or whatever provides that
interface).

$ ls /sys/class/backlight
acpi_video0 intel_backlight

Changing the value of /sys/class/intel_backlight/brightness WILL change
the brightness on Ubuntu 12.04. I believe this applies to any other
relatively recent version of Ubuntu/Debian + non-obsolete kernel.

Changing the value of /sys/class/acpi_video0/brightness failed, and
yielded no result. The brightness keys presumably used this as a
default, and did not work.

I performed this testing within a livecd because this laptop now
principally runs OpenBSD.

Again, looks like intel_backlight, but I'm sorry if it's something
else. Once more, happy to run any commands/investigate further if it'd
help you out.

Failing that, after reading, I understand that acpi_backlight=vendor
disables the ACPI driver built-in. It is possible that acer_wmi is the
relevant driver (Packard Bell is owned by Acer).

In that case disabling acpivideo(4) in UKC (see config(8)) might give
you working backlight control.

This works, thank you, but the hotkeys still won't work. xev doesn't
recognise that they are being pressed. xbacklight does function.

Any ideas?

Is there a way for me to let whatever driver is hogging them give it up
to Xorg? F11 and F12 could just act as normal keys, and I would be able
to write a script or configure Xfce to handle them as-desired.
