6.6 GENERIC #583 amd64 Crashes after booting on ACER Aspire 3

Jon Fineman
I sysupgraded to 6.6 current #583 on my laptop. The prior current was
working, not sure what number.

About 30-60 seconds after booting it presumably crashes and the laptop
powers off. After booting again it goes through file system checking and
again after about 30-60 seconds after the login prompt it powers off.

It is a test laptop so I can play with it a bit. However I am not sure
how to mount the internal HD from the boot prompt or the shell of the
installer. If someone can point me to some instructions I can try and
get the log files off of it. Or if you think this has been addressed in
the upcoming snapshot I can wait.

Thanks.

Jon

This is a dmesg from an older release, so you can at least see the
hardware installed.

ODP: 6.6 GENERIC #583 amd64 Crashes after booting on ACER Aspire 3

Kuba Głoś
Hello Jon!
Did your laptop boot completely after upgrade?
Does it power after it gets to login prompt?

For me it looks like cooling system failure/defect…
Are you able to get into BIOS setup and monitor temperatures for few minutes from there?

Kind regards,
Kuba

Temat: 6.6 GENERIC #583 amd64 Crashes after booting on ACER Aspire 3

I have also been having the same problem for a few snapshots.

It boots, crashing at any time, during boot or after starting X or without
using X. It always powers off.

I assumed that it was a memory problem, but I just replaced with a new
memory stick. It didn't help.

Here is a dmesg from a boot that got far enough along to produce one.

I've been watching for someone else to report this problem, otherwise I
was thinking hardware problem.

I have full access to the hard drive, is there anything else useful I
can pull off of it before trying a newer snapshot?
I also moved the swap file to different disk sectors. No help.
disable amdgpu also didn't help.

Here is the dmesg. I will also give another go at a newer snapshot too.
On a USB stick.

The sysupgrade worked fine. It rebooted clean and I received the emails
about the upgrade (they are forwarded to my main box).

It powers off about 30-60 seconds after the login prompt. I have enough
time to log in and do one or two quick commands and then it powers off.

While in BIOS the fan does not come on. However booting into BSD the fan
comes on quite aggressively. So it could be in some kind of loop. The
prior versions worked ok. Even with the prior versions the fan would
come on quite loud with a moderate work load (in my judgement of course).

I can leave it in the BIOS for an extended period of time without issue.
The fan never comes on. I can boot into the installer and poke around
for an extended period of time. However the fan will come on, but it
does not crash. For this model I don't see any temperature available
from the BIOS.

I just don't have any copies of the older snapshots.
I do have the emails though. Let me check to see which order I used from
the emails.

My method has been to try at home with laptop. If snapshot works, then I
put it on my two servers.

I am also doing some porting, which this has held up. I went ahead and
put latest -current on servers without any problems, so I'm back to
work.

The laptop is running an old 6.3 USB I keep around for connecting to a
Java KVM (haven't needed, but I keep it anyway).
I'm just mounting relevant partitions from main hard drive also.

OK, I am pretty sure that either

    [hidden email]:/usr/src/sys/arch/amd64/compile/GENERIC.MP
or maybe one newer (found some packages updated on the 20th of December)
worked

I also saw in this thread the possiblity of a temp sensor failure.
If that was changed in the snapshots, that would be reasonable.
Older versions work just fine right now.

These are my known snapshots. Unfortunately, I don't run daily and weekly
every single time right after update. So I also listed my mail messages
which should be very close to snapshot.

Jon, Chris,

Does the problem occur when you disable amdgpio(4) in the kernel?

Type "boot -c" at the bootloader prompt and then "disable amdgpio" at
the UKC> prompt followed by "quit".

That didn't help. I disabled it and it still crashed/powered off.

I also tried booting into single user mode. That gave me a little more
time, but still powered off before I could try and mount my HD.

Nope, didn't change anything.
