6.5-stable - Video output on openchrome causes xenodm to crash

When attempting to play a MPEG2-SP video file with mplayer, X11 or xine (no options so xv is the default acceleration), the screen flashes briefly and after a few seconds, xenodm resets to the login screen. On 6.3 video playback worked fine under same conditions. Both systems use the defaults for the xf86 driver. The logs below are as follows: dmesg Xorg.0.log.old xenodm.log mplayer.log. EXA+composite acceleration is enabled by default which conflicts with the man page for openchrome.

Seems to be a regression between xf86-video-openchrome 0.2.905 and 0.6.176 judging by bug reports on freedesktop. Reverting to the old version would probably fix the issue but then the new fixes and performance gains would be lost.

I posted a diff [1] to update openchrome to 0.6.182, could you try if
it helps, or at the very least doesn't make things any worse?

I might try a newer openchrome driver on a snapshot closer to the time of the next release, but my system's working fine except for xv and I don't think there's been any progress on that since 176.

You might be interested to know that the iso image for i386 defaulted to the old typeface (I think Gallant?) for the console during and post-installation, I haven't seen Spleen in action at all.

Alright. For info, I commited the update to 0.6.182 today.

That's because Spleen (or previously Gallant) is only used on framebuffer
consoles, which are not supported on VIA graphics hardware. In text mode
you will still be seeing your system's VGA BIOS font.
